We have sad news to relay. We’ve decided to shut down The Frisc.
We have a couple more stories to publish, then we’ll wrap up by the end of September. We’re grateful for everyone’s support during this amazing ride. What started in 2017 as an experiment among four friends lasted nearly a decade.
We began with a clear, urgent mission: to shine a spotlight on the tumultuous changes and crises in our favorite city. Few people (or news outlets) knew or cared about the housing shortage and how it was intertwined with other problems like homelessness, struggling small businesses, underfunded public transit, and shrinking public school enrollment.
Today, housing and affordability are at the top of San Francisco’s agenda, and we’re proud that our reporting helped catalyze that shift.
Nonprofit media in the best of times is no easy lift. These are not the best of times. Even with generous and loyal supporters, we don’t see a path to long-term sustainability.
It’s deeply disappointing, but we prefer this take: Our nearly 10 years of clear-eyed, sharp-tongued, award-winning journalism is a sign that it’s possible to make a difference with great ideas, maniacal focus, and high editorial standards. We’re also proud that some of the best young local reporters, now at places like Mission Local, the SF Standard, CalMatters, KALW, and Fresnoland, started their careers with us.
It’s no time to mourn. Come celebrate with us. We’re having a party Friday, Oct. 2 at an oh-so-San Francisco venue with SF-themed trivia, karaoke, and more. Information and RSVPs here.
